Spreading Love and Sharing Stories: SABRINA
Born in Okinawa, Japan within a military family, singer/songwriter Sabrina Dagoc spent her early years of childhood bouncing from place to place without having a firm definition of what to call home. “As I grew older, I felt like I wasn’t loving myself and I didn’t have a home within myself.” In order to share her story on her struggles with love as well as a way to spread love to others, Sabrina released her first EP, “Are You Listening?” in May of this year.
With seven tracks Sabrina created a message that mixed in ideas of self-love, loving others, and letting others show love. When asked about what this project was to her she responded saying that for the first time in her life, she feels that she is genuinely happy and that the project was her going back to see what had hurt her and what she has healed from. Sabrina states that the second track “I can explain” was the most important for her when building the EP. “That poem was the drive. It inspired everything else. It pretty much is a sum up of my life.” The other tracks on the EP have themes that cover comparing yourself to others, using positive self-talk, and introspective thought.
Her project ends with a track titled “Listen (Meditation)” which reflects her heavy influence and connection to her faith. The track is a guided mediation that is reminiscent of the way someone would lead praise and worship during church events and services. She gained inspiration for ending her EP in this unorthodox way from her time being a leader at a church retreat in February. When speaking about her love for her faith she stated that youth ministry helped her find her purpose in life. Singing was a passion that was influenced by doing karaoke with her mom during family events but was further pushed by her strong ties to the church.
“Are You Listening?” is a recollection of Sabrina’s journey of loving herself and allowing others to love her. With the goal of spreading love and sharing her story, the EP relates to others and makes listeners feel like they’re not alone in their personal routes to happiness. By looking back into her past, she was able to produce seven tracks that described her pains as well as her victories that have built her into who the woman she is today.
Make sure to listen to “Are You Listening?” on all platforms and watch out for the release of her new single, “Here To Stay.”
