Woke Culture

Staying up to date with social issues and fighting for some sort of right seems to be what everyone has in their own personal repertoire of traits. With the expanded uses of social media, it’s incredible how quickly a hashtag can turn into a full-scale political movement with millions backing it with full force. There is nothing wrong with it. Social media has gotten young adults to focus some attention on politics but the problem with gaining much of your political knowledge from the quickness of social media is exactly that. It’s too quick.

With much of the younger generation labeling themselves as progressives, it’s no surprise that most trending political topics on social media gravitate more towards the likings of a social justice warrior. Yes, whenever anything is trending, it sparks awareness but there’s only a percentage of people that would be willing to do more research beyond what is already seen from an occasional scroll. People like to feel included and up to date, so when someone uses a new hashtag or posts something “for the culture,” they feel accepted, current, and relevant.

A central idea that can be easily observed from these social movements, is to be more widely accepting and sensitive of all peoples regardless of lifestyle. A large problem is that we see societies of people disregarding any kind of ramification of trying too hard to cater to the emotional and personal needs of individuals. Pushing for young people to stay “woke” is amazing. It gets people to be more socially aware and more sensitive towards different kinds of people and cultures, but with this heightened sense of sensitivity comes an unnecessary push to find the political correctness in any kind of situation.
