Original and/or Creative
In an age where everything is pretty much found with a quick search and a couple swipes, it should be so much easier to keep ourselves entertained. However, I find that giving easy access to a world of media, music, and streaming has made us more interested in receiving as opposed to creating. Nowadays someone that creates something that is truly their own is a novelty instead of a commonality. Thus, we find our peers sitting on the couch, scrolling through their phones, hoping that something new will just come up to keep them entertained.
We’ve created a generation of people who don’t have the capacity to create. On the flip-side, many of you will say that with all the quick access to information, there are more and more creatives popping up here and there. To play devil’s advocate, with all the videos, songs, and pictures that bombard us on all social media platforms, what would you say is your personal ratio of copycats to truly original works that you see throughout the day?
That seems to always be the biggest challenge that meets any creative. Even now more than ever. Yes, it’s great that everyone is so connected and that people can pretty much share their work with a tap of a finger. But it’s for that very reason, there are so many copycats out there. How many dancers dance like other dancers? How many songs sound like other songs? How many videos? Designs? Aesthetics? We’re all just following the wave of each trend. It’s easy to label yourself as a creative, it’s a lot harder to say that you are truly an original.
