Past is Ever-Present
The Past. We live in the present and do our best to make the most of a moment. The future is what we plan for and what we look forward to seeing. We try our best to learn what we can from the past so that we can forget it and move on. Events that we’ve lived through are behind us but I find that many tend to have such a firm grip on trauma and a loose hold on what gives positive substance to new experiences. The past is always going to play a part in our lives, but it’s up to you on how to utilize it.
“History repeats itself.” A statement that we’ve all heard said to us over and over again rings true to a certain extent. It’s almost uncanny that many of us find ourselves in difficult situations that are all too familiar and we quickly respond with, “Here we go again,” or “This always happens to me.” Because of past pains that are so tightly sewn into our minds, when faced with something that has a slight similarity it’s easy to accept that what will come next will be a repetition of what has happened to us before. More often than not, instead of learning from the past, we just make ourselves numb to the things that hurt us - causing us to mix numbness with self growth and enlightenment. Numbness is an easy option to accept but detachment just makes us anesthetized from the possibility of learning.
Facing similarities with new methods of understanding helps us learn and let go of traumas from the past that have held us down from new experiences. There’s always the anxiety of new challenges that arise afterwards but taking them head on is what gives access to answers that we never thought we had. Building a strong identity comes from emerging out of instances that make us feel weak. Your comfort and independence requires rewriting history whenever we find it repeating itself.
